Austin was raised in New Jersey. His goal is to provide a better understanding of depressive-like behaviors and explore alternative treatment options. Austin is committed to mentoring and teaching in his laboratory. He provides professional and career development assistance for at all levels. He is also an advocate on making a more diverse research environment.

Karen Safaryan, Ph.D., earned his Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Hertfordshire, United Kingdom, where he investigated pattern recognition in large-scale network models of the cerebellar cortex. He then completed his postdoctoral research in UCLA’s Department of Physics and Astronomy, studying hippocampal neural dynamics during virtual reality navigation. As a Project Scientist in UCLA’s Department of Neurology, he explores local and extended brain network mechanisms underlying adaptive decision-making and cognitive flexibility in dynamic environments, using large-scale neural recording techniques (Neuropixels probes) in rodents.
Favorite hobbies: Hiking and Traveling, Poker and Chess
Favorite team: Liverpool FC
Hannah Stutt received her Ph.D. in Neuroscience from the University of Iowa in 2026 under the mentorship of Dr. Nandakumar Narayanan. Her dissertation project used fiber photometry and behavioral neuroscience techniques to investigate how dorsal striatal dopamine tracks time-based decisions to act, and how amphetamine disrupts dopamine signaling during timing differently in males and females. Hannah joined the Coley Lab in June 2026 and is excited to continue her interest in mechanistic and behavioral sex differences. Here, her research will focus on medial prefrontal cortex circuitry in depression, facial expression behavior, and how psychedelics alter depressive-like behaviors and mPFC dynamics. Outside of lab, she can be found searching for new coffee shops, attending concerts, or watching reality TV with friends.
Tasneem is a medical student at UCLA planning to match into psychiatry. Her time as a neuroscience undergraduate kindled her desire to apply rigorous basic science methods to psychiatric disease. She is especially interested in treatment resistant patient populations and the growing literature of psychedelic intervention.
